This was a present I made for our friend’s adorable bundle of cuteness, Emerson. His first birthday is in a few weeks and we were home for the weekend so we decided to deliver it early. It’s a pretty big deviation from my old designs for name shelves (here|here|here|here) but this one won’t cover the name when you use it and has a bunch of different places to put things. The large letter is designed to unscrew from the back so they can easily finish it however they would like. I previously teased this new design here. Some process photos below.

Hey look, I made a thing! Unfortunately, it’s a shelf, which I seem to make a lot of.
I have a tendency to buy lots of little trinkets and toys I want to put on my desk, and then not have much actual space to place them, so I made a double decker shelf. I decided not to do any fancy routing of even finish for the time being, because I just wanted to get it done. My wife and I think it actually looks nice unfinished. I also thought I would use pocket screws to mate the top and bottom to the sides, not thinking that I would not have much room inside to drive the screw into the final side. I ended up having to use the smallest socket wrench I had, a 1/4″ socket and a bit to screw on the top.
I decided to build a french cleat into the back of the shelf instead of traditional hangers. I made a bunch of little 1×2″ cleats and screwed two into the wall to mount it. I think that will give me more flexibility in the future if I want to adjust it or make something bigger.
The last little job I did today was to add another small shelf off my monitor stand to hold up my LEGO Saturn V rocket. I’m calling it launch pad 39V.
This is certainly not my idea, but I had the better part of a pallet I was going to throw out, so I made a shelf instead.
Some friends of our just added another little boy to their family so we thought we’d make them matching shelves for the boys room.
I’m working on another “word shelf” for some family back home, so I thought I’d post some process photos.
I’ll put the final picture up top once it’s all done. Finally got it all done!
Today I also had time to finish the “finish” on my hope shelf. No to find somewhere to put it…
Today I finally got around to building one of the word shelves i thought up the other day. It was also my first time getting to use the router I bought a few months back.
This is a crappy cellphone pick of a shelf idea I had. Have to see if I can find the time to try to make one.
We’ve been meaning to give our oldest son some more “surface area” in his room to put all his “things” on, so this weekend I made him help me build a floating shelf. He quickly covered it.
