Krita 3.3.0 – Rejoice!

Krita 3.3.0

I have been using Krita for probably the last year and have slowly been getting more comfortable moving away from MyPaint.  I thought I was going to rely on this application even more so after I purchased a Surface Pro 3.  There was a horrible problem though.  When I bought my Surface Pro, the Krita version at the time did not support the n-trig based pen hardware, so I was forced to use the 32-bit version which still had some old compatibility built in.  That version would often crash when I was editing large, complicated files, or when I was trying to work too fast with processor/memory heavy functions.

Well, last week they released version 3.3.0, and it’s got n-trig support baked into the 64-bit version!  Having updated, it works like a dream, and at least one other annoying thing has been fixed.

I used to be able to draw with the front of the pen, then flip it over to the rear and it would automatically switch to an erasing brush.  In most other applications, flipping the pen back to the front would automatically return you to your previous brush and keep drawing.  This was not the case with the 32-bit 3.2.1 version, but it works perfectly in 3.3.0!  I imagine there are other improvements that I haven’t found yet, but I’m ecstatic so far.  If you’ve never tried Krita out, I would heartily recommend it, especially for Surface product owners who are looking for an open source illustrating application.

I also noticed that my “Stuff” page is super out of date, so I should be updating that soon.

P.S.  I really would love to see a replay function like ProCreate.

Batgirl Colored

batgirl

This doodle was colored in Krita on my Surface Pro 3.  The color distracts a little from all the things I don’t like about it.

Batgirl

batgirl lines

In my continuing efforts to work more on drawing the female form, I thought I would take a stab at Batgirl.  Not happy with it, but it’s not horrible.

Proportions are a little off, pose is wonky, needs more dynamic action…

Original in pencil and brushpen, quickly converted to lines in Inkscape, then some fixes in Krita.  All on my Surface Pro 3.

Lethal League Switch

letahl league switch

The other day my boys were able to get some video game time with their cousins and were playing some crazy thing called lethal league.  It’s like ping pong on crack.  I played the character Switch for a bit and was inspired to doodle this guy later that night.

Niko and the Sword of Light

Amazon released an original show today that will be a cute adventure for all ages.  They released a pilot a few months ago for user voting, which also ended up winning an daytime emmy award.

Birthday Card

My oldest son envisioned an eclectic assemblage of characters for a birthday card he wanted to give someone, so we ended up making this.

War Chicken

Yesterday my youngest son caused a conversation to ensue, within which the phrase “war chicken” was uttered, thus creating a compulsion within his father to doodle this.  My apologies internet.

Star Wars Ships

These are a few of the ships I had to cartoon up for that Star Wars retelling I have been working on.  Thought I would at least post something this weekend.

Wonder Woman

wonder woman

I took our boys to go see the Wonder Woman movie a few weeks back and just this weekend had enough down time (not allocated to making stuff for others) that I could doodle this mighty heroine.  If you’ve followed my work for any amount of time, you may notice that I don’t often draw the female form.  I find it difficult to capture their physiology without reverting to ridiculous comic book proportions, so I normally just avoid it all together.  This is something I need to work on though, so I gave her a shot.

I also started a video capture of the inking process, which I tried to hurry through and was defeated continually by her left hand.  Eventually I gave up.  Observe my failures below.

Cutthroat Chicken

When the show Cutthroat Kitchen first came out, my youngest accidentally said Cutthroat Chicken, and that has pretty much stuck in our household.  For some reason, I just got a visual of that for the first time a few days ago and thought I would doodle it.
