This was a present I made for our friend’s adorable bundle of cuteness, Emerson. His first birthday is in a few weeks and we were home for the weekend so we decided to deliver it early. It’s a pretty big deviation from my old designs for name shelves (here|here|here|here) but this one won’t cover the name when you use it and has a bunch of different places to put things. The large letter is designed to unscrew from the back so they can easily finish it however they would like. I previously teased this new design here. Some process photos below.

Some friends of our just added another little boy to their family so we thought we’d make them matching shelves for the boys room.
I hammered out quite a few projects I’d been piling up this holiday weekend, this being the most time consuming. It’s a wooden plaque for some friends of ours who just bought their first home. Started life as a flat board I picked up at Michael’s, and after some carving, sanding, carving again, paint, detailing, scuffing, detailing again, and clear coat; it ended up looking like this.
My sister-in-law was down for a visit and she always ends up making something really cool for us before she leaves. This year she created the thread art of our last name below, so I decided to return the favor with a digital version for her family.
I finally finished my mountain design for my custom papersigns. This was the first one I cut out with my silhouette cameo, instead of by hand. It greatly speeds things up, but I wasted quite a few pieces of cardstock and printer toner, getting all the different parts of the process working. Will be working on a San Francisco styled one next. For sale in my etsy.com store.
All the design work was done in inkscape, with the texturing for printing done in The GIMP.
The last few years Dodge has been running a really cool add campaign where they use a bunch of old letterpress type pieces, locks and furniture (plus some fake garbage they photoshop in too). This year when we were home for Thanksgiving, I finally got a chance to sneak down and play around with some of my dad’s type to try my hand at it. Just had to do a horizontal flip on the picture! I did quite a few different setting with spacing, different names, arrangements, etc. Will have to find time to play around with this more sometime.
I’ve been tossing around the idea of making more of the custom name papercraft things. I took the Iowa out of the one I did for our family and made a generic farm template. I’ll probably come up with more like city, desert, mountains, river-y-ish, space, underwater… Or what about a Paris background for a couple’s wedding anniversary? Or elements of someones hobbies or career for special occasions. I thought about taking a stab at an etsy store, but I don’t know if anything would sell.
Here’s another one I did for my sister and her husband. (It looks pretty cool backlit.)
